Buying mulch in bulk is the most economical option for medium to large landscaping projects. But if you have never ordered bulk mulch before, the process can seem intimidating. How much do you actually need? How does pricing work? What happens on delivery day? This guide covers everything you need to know.
When Does Bulk Make Sense?
As a general rule, buying bulk becomes more economical than bags when you need more than about 3-4 cubic yards of material. Here is a quick reference:
- Under 2 cubic yards (about 25 bags): Bags are more practical — less waste, easier to handle and store.
- 2-4 cubic yards (25-55 bags): Either option works. Bulk saves money; bags offer convenience.
- 5+ cubic yards (65+ bags): Bulk is significantly cheaper and far more practical. Loading and opening 65+ bags is labor-intensive and time-consuming.
- 20+ cubic yards: Bulk is the only practical option. This is our minimum for bulk delivery at Coco Garden Supply.
How Bulk Mulch Pricing Works
Per-Cubic-Yard Pricing
Bulk mulch is priced per cubic yard. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, which is roughly equivalent to 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags. The per-yard price varies based on:
- Product type: Natural mulch is the least expensive; colored mulch costs more; specialty products like certified playground chips are at the top
- Quantity: Larger orders typically receive volume discounts
- Season: Peak season (Feb-Apr) may have slightly higher pricing due to demand
Delivery Charges
Delivery is typically charged separately and depends on:
- Distance: Deliveries closer to the supplier cost less
- Quantity: Some suppliers include delivery for large orders; smaller bulk orders may have a flat delivery fee
- Access: Difficult access (long driveways, gated communities, tight spaces) may affect pricing
Getting an Accurate Quote
When requesting a bulk quote, provide:
- Product type (color, natural, compost, etc.)
- Estimated quantity in cubic yards
- Delivery address and zip code
- Any access notes (gate codes, narrow roads, overhead clearance limitations)
- Preferred delivery date or window

Calculating Your Bulk Mulch Needs
The formula: Total Square Footage x Depth (in feet) / 27 = Cubic Yards
Quick Reference at 3 Inches Deep
- 500 sq ft = 4.6 cubic yards
- 1,000 sq ft = 9.3 cubic yards
- 2,000 sq ft = 18.5 cubic yards
- 3,000 sq ft = 27.8 cubic yards
- 5,000 sq ft = 46.3 cubic yards
Always add 10-15% to your calculation for waste, settling, and miscellaneous use. For a detailed walkthrough, see our mulch calculator guide.
Preparing for Bulk Delivery
Choose Your Drop Location
Bulk mulch is delivered by dump truck and deposited in a pile. Plan where you want this pile placed:
- Driveway: The most common location. Make sure to clear vehicles and anything you do not want mulch on.
- Street: Possible but check local regulations. Some municipalities limit how long material can sit on the street.
- Yard: If accessible by truck, this places material closer to where it will be used. Protect the lawn with tarps if needed.
Access Requirements
Standard dump trucks need:
- 10-12 feet of width clearance
- 14 feet of overhead clearance (watch for low branches, power lines, overhangs)
- Firm surface that can support 30,000+ lbs (avoid soft ground, lawns in wet conditions)
- Room to back up and raise the dump bed (about 22 feet of overhead clearance when dumping)
Tarp or Board the Area
If mulch will be dumped on a surface you want to protect (driveway, pavers), lay a tarp first. This makes cleanup much easier and prevents staining from colored mulch dye.
Spreading Bulk Mulch
Tools Needed
- Wheelbarrow (or two — this speeds things up significantly)
- Garden rake
- Square-point shovel
- Garden fork (for fluffing and spreading)
- Gloves (colored mulch will stain hands temporarily)
Time Estimates
One person can typically spread about 1-2 cubic yards per hour, depending on distances and terrain. A crew of two can handle 3-4 yards per hour. For reference:
- 10 cubic yards = approximately 5-10 hours for one person
- 20 cubic yards = approximately 1-2 days for one person, or a full day for a two-person crew
For very large projects, consider our blow-on installation service which can cover large areas in hours rather than days.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Underestimating quantity: Running short means a second delivery charge. Better to have a little extra than not enough.
- Not preparing the area: Spreading mulch over weeds is a waste. Clean and prep beds first.
- Leaving the pile too long: Bulk mulch piles generate heat internally. Material left in a pile for more than a week can start to decompose and develop sour spots. Spread within a few days.
- Applying too deep: Enthusiasm with fresh mulch can lead to over-application. Stick to 2-3 inches. More is not better.
- Volcano mulching: Do not pile mulch against tree trunks or plant stems. This causes rot, disease, and pest problems.
